  • History:  Albert was born to a mining man and his wife in a small mining town.  His father was forman for the Trillium mine in Kelly.  The whole family was Methodist.  Albert moved to Alberquerque and became an undertaker.  Most of the immediate family were buried by him.  Bert was a mason and well-loved.  He was talked about like God.  He was easy-going and would let grave-payments slide.  His funeral was standing-room only.  He helped mexicans and indians.  Spoke fluent Spanish.  Well loved by the Mexicans and tight with the police  He helped buy them a 2-way radio.

Obituary of Albert James Exter
       Bert Exter, 71, Funeral Director Here, Succumbs
( in the Albuquerque Journal )      Albert J. (Bert) Exter, 71, Albuquerque funeral director and civic leader, died Sunday afternoon at his home, 2132 E Silver Ave., after a brief illness.
     He was a past district governor and international counselor of Lions International and a former member of the Employment Security Commission of New Mexico. He also served three terms as president of the New Mexico Funeral Directors Assn. and was a member of the State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors.
     A native of Kelly, he moved to Albuquerque in 1919, the year he entered the mortuary profession.
     He held the Silver Beaver award in Scouting; served as a director of the Better Business Bureau from 1951 to 1955 and as its president in 1955; participated in the organization of the Albuquerque Community Chest and served on the board of the Salvation Army here from 1926 to the time of his death.
     From 1927 to 1941, he served on the advisory board of the Order of DeMolay. He also served a year on the board of directors of the Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce, and in 1939 he was chairman of the New Mexico State Safety council.
     He was a member of First Baptist Church, Temple Lodge no.6, AF & AM, the Scottish Rite Consistory of Santa Fe, Ballut Abyad Shrine Temple, Albuquerque Elks Lodge No. 461 and the Albuquerque Lions Club, of which he was past president. He also was a former member of the Selective Service Board here.
     Surviving his wife, Elizabeth; a son, Thelbert L. Exter of Sylmar, Calif.; twin daughters, Mrs. B. Y. Nelson and Mrs. Oliver Frei, both of Albuquerque; and seven grandchildren.
     Also surviving are five stepsons and two stepdaughters: Edward Ward of Waukegan, Ill., Charles S. Ward of Tacoma, Wash., Warren M. Ward of Anchorage, Alaska, James B. Ward of Lubbock, Tex., Robert D. Ward of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Olive Whorton of Okinawa and Mrs. Josephine Peery of Albuquerque; 12 step - grandchildren and 12 step - great - grandchildren.

Mabel Alvira Oleson

  • History:   Born to a Norwegian father Mentz Biller Oleson and an American mother, Geolena Oleson owned an appartment house on Forrester NW (near Old Town, Alberquerque)  She was small.  Made fresh doughnuts once a week.  She was wheelchair bound - I do know the reason for this yet.  We have several pictures of her.
